Mark Friesen on Dialectical Journals
I would like to include more reflection in my course, because I think its an important skills. I think students are more likely to respond to directed reflection like this if they are new to the idea. I also really connected with two items that Mark brings up: a) that students remember more when they are able to connect learning with personal experience and b) that understanding dense complex texts requires multiple readings.
I think I have encountered dialectical journals in PIDP courses, but didn’t know what they were called or the idea behind them. I am unlikely to use them in my course because it isn’t really text-based, but I could see it working well in other subjects.
