I was taught that education is the one thing that can’t be taken away from you.
I certainly support and recognize the importance of life-long learning. I realize that a good learner is like a good scientist: just as one scientific finding or observation leads to more questions, learning one thing leaves one with appetite for even more knowledge.
In today’s rapidly changing world, the technology that will be available at the end of one’s career is not even conceivable at the outset. Not only are new skills necessary for to adapt to that change, but entire types of jobs become obsolete and replaced by very different ones. Life-long learning is therefore essential, not only as a hobby, but for sheer survival in the workplace.
